About us


The Wilkes Adult Developmental Activity Program (ADAP) provides adults with developmental disabilities opportunities to work via mobile work crews and supported employment; opportunities to access community services like banks, stores and health facilities; opportunities to participate in recreational outings, events and vacations. ADAP also provides Basic Skills classes and counseling.

  History

The program bagan in January of 1975 with 12 workers and 2 staff members in the basement of the North Wilkesboro First United Methodist Church. In November of 1982 the program relocated to its permanent home on Boston Avenue in North Wilkesboro. A.D.A.P has grown throughout the years and has served over 150 individuals.


Purpose

 

Wilkes A.D.A.P provides opportunities for adults with developmental disabilities to develop vocational skills through mobile work crews and supported employment. The program services enable workers to maximize their self-confidence, inddependence, and personal enrichment by:

    Building in opportunities for workers to make choices

  •  

    Encouraging peer relationships

  •  

    Maintaining adult norms and expectations

  •  

    Encouraging independence in decision making, travling, and rereational pursuits

  •  

    Supporting the "dignity of risk" philosophy

  • Treating all workers with respect and dignity
